Glitters Marks Mariah Carey's Debut with Virgin RecordsJune 10th, 2001
For Glitter, which is also the title soundtrack to her debut movie set in the early 80s, Mariah has enlisted a stellar lineup of co-producers and guest artists, and has also written and produced what are expected to be some of her best ballads to date. The first single from Glitter will be Loverboy, due to hit radio in early June. The song features a hook from Cameo's 1985 smash hit, Candy. Rather than sampling the original, Mariah went one step further and enlisted Cameo's own Larry Blackmon and Thomas Jenkins to aid in the remake. The song, co-produced by DJ Clark Kent, also features rappers Ludacris and Da Brat, and has been remixed by producers David Morales and MJ Cole. The video for Loverboy was shot recently in Los Angeles, CA by acclaimed photographer David Lachapelle. The star-studded visual features appearances by Da Brat, Ludacris and Cameo, who take to the motor speedway for an adrenaline-fueled adventure on wheels. Mariah Carey, undoubtedly one of the most commercially-successful recording artists of all time, has sold more than 150 million albums and singles worldwide, and has earned an incredible 84 RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum certifications. Her incredible career began with the release of her first album, the self-titled Mariah Carey in 1990, which produced four Number One singles, and she continued to pump out the hits with each consecutive release. Her songs have held the Number One position on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles List for a record-setting 61 weeks, 16 of those with One Sweet Day, her duet with Boyz II Men, another record-setting accomplishment. She has had a Number One hit with every initial single release from each of her albums - four of which have gone to Number One, and all of which have also gone Top Five - and she has had a Number One single every year for the last ten consecutive years. In total, Carey has had fifteen Number One songs to date, more than any other female artist in history. At the 1999 ceremonies, Billboard appropriately named Mariah their "Artist of the Decade," and the World Music Awards titled her the "Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" at the 2000 ceremonies.
