Lara Croft: Coming to a Silver Screen Near You
By Joshua Smith - June 10th, 2001
While fans of overblown cinematic drama may have has their blockbuster cravings satisfied this week with the release of Pearl Harbor,
the real event of the season, in the eyes of gamers and action fans the world over is the upcoming release of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
The movie, starring multiple Oscar®-winner Angelina Jolie will open nationwide on Thursday the 21st of June.
In the movie, Jolie reinvents the modern action hero, in presenting the most powerful, adrenaline-fueled portrayal of a independent female lead in an action film since
Sigourney Weaver's breakthrough role in Aliens. Jolie's character, former-cyberbabe Lara Croft was born into wealth and groomed at the most
elite of schools. A female version of Indiana Jones, she travels to dangerous and mysterious locales around the
globe in search of rare, lost crypts and long-forgotten empires. She speaks numerous languages, is highly trained for combat and answers to no one, obeying only a desire for adventure. In her celluloid portrayal, Lara is driven not by the promise of riches and life-threatening action (although I'm sure that somes into play), but by the goal of uniting with her father (played by Jolie's real-life dad, Jon Voight). The movie also features an appearance by Australian staple actor Noah Taylor (Shine, The Year My Voice Broke), who occupies the role of Bryce.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is produced by Lawrence Gordon Production in association with Eidos Interactive, who distributed the game series played by 100s of millions the world over.
