June 16th, 2001

Soon after 1.00 pm today an explosion and fire occurred in the Liquids Pumping Station at the Moomba Gas Plant in the far north of South Australia. Four employees have been injured, one seriously.

Santos Managing Director, John Ellice-Flint, said, "Our main concern is with those who have been injured and their families. Stabilising their condition is our first priority."

The cause of the incident is not known, and the fire is said to have been fully extinguished.

Royal Flying Doctor Service personnel, both those permanently based at Moomba and medical staff from Broken Hill, are on site. In addition, an investigation team has been instigated to examine all matters associated with the incident.

A hotline has been established for Santos employees and their families. The hotline number is 8224 7200.
