Green Incentives for Young People in Western SydneyMay 11th, 2001 Young environmentalists in Sydney's west have the chance to share in almost $3,000 in cash and prizes on offer from Sydney Water as part of this year's Western Sydney Environment Week. "Young people hold the key to our environmental future," Minister for Western Sydney Kim Yeadon said. "We are on the lookout for youngsters who have done their bit for the local environment and who deserve recognition. "That is why we have created the inaugural Sydney Water Youth Environmental Awards and as of today invitations are now open for nominations. "The awards are for young people involved with school or community projects that benefit one of the many waterways in Sydney's west. "There are many young people concerned about the environment and doing something positive to protect it. "This award can hopefully encourage even more young people to get involved." Sydney's west has some of the most significant waterways in NSW. It is important young people continue to develop an enthusiasm and willingness to preserve our aquatic environments. The awards are open to people aged from 5 to 17 years and will be made in two categories - juniors 5 to 12 years and seniors 13 to 17. The winner in each category will receive $500 and a Gold plaque, second $300 and a silver plaque, and third $150 and a bronze plaque. All six winners will also have the opportunity to camp overnight at Taronga Zoo as guests of Sydney Water in conjunction with the Zoo’s Roar and Snore. Western Sydney Environment Week runs from 3-9 June and covers the local government areas of Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Bankstown, Blue Mountains, Campbelltown, Camden, Fairfield, Holroyd, Hawkesbury, Liverpool, Penrith, Parramatta and Wollondilly. Minister Kim Yeadon will present the awards on June 5th during the World Environment Day Youth Forum, which is the official launch of Western Sydney Environment Week. For details about how to nominate for the Youth Awards contact Sydney Water on 13 20 92. Entries close 25 May 2001.
