Sun Microsystems Releases the Newest Version of the Java 2 PlatformBusiness Wire - May 29th, 2001 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the immediate availability of the beta release for the latest version of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition software (J2SE), a premier foundation for rapidly developing and deploying secure, enterprise-class Web applications and services. Version 1.4 of the software builds upon Java technology's cross-platform support and robust security model with new features and functionality, enhanced performance and scalability, and improved reliability and serviceability. The beta releases for the Solaris Operating Environment, Windows and Linux, can now be downloaded free of charge from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4. The first customer ship of J2SE technology v1.4 is scheduled for Q4 2001. J2SE software revolutionized computing with a stable, secure and feature-complete platform designed from the ground up for the Web. J2SE software allows developers to rapidly develop and deploy solutions across multiple operating environments, in less time, with reduced cost.
